LASIK, "LAser in SItu Keratomileusis" corrects the refractive errors of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.

The history of using lasers on the human eye goes back to 1985. It wasn't, however, until October, 1995 that the FDA approved the first Eximer or "cold" laser for PRK treatment for nearsightedness in the United States.

LASIK was first performed in 1990 in Europe and in 1991 in the United States in New Orleans, Louisiana. LASIK then became an "off label" procedure of choice by many outstanding laser surgeons. By 1995, LASIK received FDA approval.

Dr. Teles has been in the forefront of Laser Vision correction ever since the FDA's first approval in 1995.

Over the last 18 years many upgrades and changes in lasers, technology and treatment options for refractive errors have evolved. Since this time millions of patients world wide have enjoyed the benefits of laser vision correction.

Are you a good candidate for LASIK or other laser procedures?
A comprehensive PRE-LASIK evaluation can help find out.

Besides excellent eye health, many other factors come into play to be a good candidate. Age, stability of eyeglass correction, need for bifocals or reading glasses, pupil size, certain medical conditions, amount of correction, availability of time for follow up appointments and realistic expectations of outcome are some of the considerations needed to make this determination.

Dr. Teles' office is equipped with state of the art diagnostic equipment to evaluate corneal and complete eye health. Corneal topography, pachymetry, biomicroscope photography, and spectral microscopy are some of the advanced diagnostic equipment he uses.

Corneal topography is a special video photography of the corneal surface contour. Pachymetry measures  corneal thickness. Spectral microscopy photographs actual endothelial cells that line the inner cornea layer. Biomicrosope photography allows instant documentation and viewing by patients of  of their own tear film, dry eye or corneal surface irregulaities.

Further testing is preformed to rule out and/or correct dry eye, allergic eye conditions and other conditions such as cataract and glaucoma. Retinal health is evaluated using the RTA (Retinal Thickness Analyzer). The RTA is the newest "3-D" photographic technology for documenting retinal health issues isuch as in  diabetes, macular degeneration and glaucoma.

In depth communication with patients as the evaluation progresses has always been a hallmark of Dr. Teles' style.

Attention to details, goals and especially concerns of patients, allows Dr. Teles to counsel patients as to which laser procedure may be the best.

Unfortunately, not everyone is a good candidate for the "LASIK" laser procedure.  The good news is that many people who are not good candidates for LASIK may be eligible for other laser treatment modalities.   LASIK is but one of several other Laser procedures such as PRK or LASEK. For others ocular lens implant surgery may be a good choice.

It may be that no laser procedure is realistic and a NON-LASER procedure such as CORNEAL RESHAPING known as ORTHO-K or CRT  may be the best way to achieve one's goals.  Age, prescription changes, corneal thickness and corneal health and/or medical issues can influence the selection of the best treatment modality.

Our office provides free LASER SCREENING EVALUATIONS and a complete laser vision evaluation with routine comprehensive eye and vision examinations. We are happy to answer preliminary questions by e-mail or phone.

You may call or e-mail to inquire for further information or to check if there may be insurance benefits or other options to financially help with your procedure.
