How Does IPL Treatment Work?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy offers a painless solution by delivering targeted pulses of light to liquefy and release hardened oils clogging the meibomian glands in your eyelids. This process not only reduces eyelid redness but also stimulates healthy gland function.

Here’s what to expect during your IPL treatment: Dr. Teles will start by placing protective shields over your eyes to shield them from the light pulses. Then, a thin layer of cooling gel will be applied to the treatment area, and a specialized device will administer the pulses of light around your eyelids. These pulses gently heat the skin, effectively dislodging the buildup of oils.

OptiLIGHT - Dry Eye Medical Device

After the IPL session, we’ll gently express oil from the glands, restoring normal oil flow in your tear film. While many patients experience relief from dry eye symptoms after their first or second treatment, we typically recommend an initial series of four IPL sessions, scheduled monthly over four months. This approach ensures sustained success in treating chronic dry eye syndrome and Meibomian Gland Dysfunction.

For some patients, occasional maintenance treatments may be necessary after the initial series of IPL sessions, depending on the severity of their dry eye condition. Combining IPL treatments with other dry eye therapies can further enhance effectiveness and promote healing. We’re here to tailor the treatment plan that best suits your needs for lasting relief from dry eyes.
